Blowing in the Wind è stata scritta nel 1962 e cantata per la prima volta il Sedici Aprile dello stesso anno. La strofa di mezzo venne aggiunta in un momento successivo. É probabile che la canzone sia stata ispirata da un passaggio del libro Bound for Glory (1943) di Woodie Guthrie, nella quale il cantante americano paragona la sua sensibilità politica ai giornali che svolazzano tra le vie di New York. A proposito della canzone, Dylan dirà:
