Shooting Star è stata scritta da Dylan a New Orleans, dopo un lungo giro in motocicletta con la moglie Carolyn Dennis. Racconta Dylan:
La canzone mi è arrivata completa, diretta negli occhi, come se avessi vagato per un giardino assolato. Mi illumava. Ho visto una stella cadente dal giardino della nostra casa, o forse era un meteorite
