Note e significato
Bird on a Wire venne incisa da Judy Collins nel 1968 e successivamente, il 26 Settembre 1968, da Leonard Cohen.
La canzone è stata scritta durante la permanenza nell'isola di Idra, dove Cohen viveva con la sua amante Marianne. L'ispirazione venne, com'è facile intuire, da degli uccellini che stazionavano sui cavi del telefono recentemente installati sull'isola. A tal proposito Cohen racconta:
"Inizio sempre i miei concerti con questa canzone. [...] É stata cominciata in Grecia e terminata in un motel a Hollywood nel 1969 così come tante altre cose. Alcuni versi sono stati cambiati in Oregon. In qualche modo sembra che io non riesca mai a renderla perfetta"
