Key West (philosopher Pirate) prende ispirazione dalla località di Key West (Florida), un'isola situata nella zona delle Grandi Antille, di fronte a Cuba. In passato, l'intera zona delle Antille era stato rifugio di pirati e negli Anni Sessanta, durante la crisi cubana, era possibile captare numerose radio pirata. Dylan ha visitato diverse volte questa zona e nella canzone accosta, forse con poca originalità, la serenità di questi panorami con il paradiso, citando numerosi toponimi, ad esempio Newton Street e Bayview Park.

Key West è un luogo concreto, il luogo al termine dell’America (gli Stati Uniti) del quale Dylan ci dà numerosi dettagli ma è anche un luogo dell’anima, un luogo di ricordi e un luogo che evoca la fine della vita oltre che della terra (death is on the wall).
E’ anche un luogo che esprime come lui ha vissuto la sua vita. A Key West “you stay to the left and then you lean to the right”, non c’è il centro. E Dylan di sé dice “I play both sides against the middle” e ancora “I was born on the wrong side of the railroad track”. In realtà lui era nato dalla parte giusta della ferrovia ma ha scelto di non vivere la tranquilla vita di provincia della middle class americana.
C’è tanta irrequietezza nelle parole e nella sua voce, incertezza, paura del termine della vita che non è lontano ma anche ricerca della serenità, di un luogo dell’anima, Key West, dove provare a trovare un po’ di pace.
