The First Cut Is the Deepest è stata scritta da Cat Stevens ma pubblicata per la prima volta da P. P. Arnold nel Maggio del 1967. La versione di Stevens apparirà solo nel nel Dicembre del 1967 nell'album New Masters. In realtà Stevens aveva già registrato una sua versione demo nel 1965 col fine di farsi conoscere come autore piuttosto che come cantante.
