La parte iniziale di Tunnel of Love è tratta da The Carousel Waltz del duo teatrale Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) e Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960).
Waltzers
Impropriamente tradotto montagne russe, in realtà sono quei giochi tipici dei parchi di divertimento nei quali diversi abitacoli ruotano su se stessi e intorno a un punto fisso, provocando leggeri giramenti di testa ai passeggeri.
Spanish CitySi riferisce al quartiere spagnolo della baia di Whitley, una cittadina di mare situata nel nord est dell'Inghilterra, vicino a Newcastle. Il quartiere in questione sorgeva attorno a un piccolo teatro aperto nel 1910, che venne successivamente trasformato in una sala da ballo dieci anni dopo.
Modifiche ulteriori si ebbero sul finire degli anni '70, quando l'intera area venne attrezzata con un gigantesco parco divertimenti che comprendeva, tra le sue attrazioni, montagne russe, giostre e autoscontri. L'intero quartiere venne però demolito e ridisegnato per far posto a nuove abitazioni e scuole alla fine anni '90.
Knopfler ha raccontato di essere particolarmente legato al quartiere spagnolo, dove era solito recarsi per ascoltare musica rock.
