Father and Son venne inizialmente scritto nell'ambito del progetto musicale Revolussia, ambientato durante la Rivoluzione Russa del 1917. Il figlio di cui la canzone parla vuole unirsi ai bolscevichi, mentre il padre preferirebbe che il giovane rimanesse a casa ad occuparsi della fattoria di famiglia, trovandosi magari una buona moglie e assicurandosi così un futuro tranquillo. Il musical non venne poi mai prodotto, a causa delle pessime condizioni di salute del regista.
Ma la canzone rimase, assumendo un carattere più universale e diventando un ottimo spaccato delle discussioni che intercorrono tra generazioni: i "padri" che hanno già trovato la loro strada e la loro sicurezza e i "figli" che invece rinunciano a quanto i padri possono offrire loro per cercare nuovi orizzonti. A tal proposito, Cat Stevens racconta:
Non ho mai davvero capito mio padre, ma mi ha sempre lasciato fare quello che volevo - mi ha lasciato andare. 'Father and Son' è per tutti quelli che non possono sentirsi liberi
Alcuni pensano che io abbia preso le parti del figlio. Ma non avrei potuto cantare la parte del padre senza averla pienamente compresa. Ho ascoltato recentemente questa canzone e alcuni dei versi potrebbe essere stato il padre del padre del padre del padre del padre del padre di mio padre a dirli
Father and Son è stato rilasciato come Lato B del singolo associato a Moonshadow. I vocalizzi di sottofondo sono cantati dal gallese Alun Davies, chitarrista di Cat Stevens. Father and Son era stata richiesta come colonna sonora di Moulin Rouge (2001), ma l'autore ha negato il permesso di utilizzarla a causa dei contenuti del film che contrastavano con la sua fede musulmana.

I brividi provati allora si ripetono ogni volta che la riascolto, da padre a figlio una storia infinita
Ho ascoltato questa canzone la prima volta all’età di 16 anni e ricordo che mi piacque al primo ascolto… Ora ho 63 anni e quando l’ascolto provo la stessa emozione. Non ho mai saputo tutta la storia di questa canzone, il suo venire da lontano e penso che sia un valore aggiunto ad un brano meraviglioso e sempre attuale
