Patterns

The night sets softly
With the hush of falling leaves,
Casting shivering shadows
On the houses through the trees,
And the light from a street lamp
Paints a pattern on my wall,
Like the pieces of a puzzle
Or a child's uneven scrawl.

Up a narrow flight of stairs
In a narrow little room,
As I lie upon my bed
In the early evening gloom.
Impaled on my wall
My eyes can dimly see
The pattern of my life
And the puzzle that is me.

From the moment of my birth
To the instant of my death,
There are patterns I must follow
Just as I must breathe each breath.
Like a rat in a maze
The path before me lies,
And the pattern never alters
Until the rat dies.

And the pattern still remains
On the wall where darkness fell,
And it's fitting that it should,
For in darkness I must dwell.
Like the color of my skin,
Or the day that I grow old,
My life is made of patterns
That can scarcely be controlled.

La notte giunge dolcemente
con il crepitare delle foglie che cadono
proiettando ombre spettrali
sulle case attraverso gli alberi
E la luce di un lampione della strada
disegna un motivo sul muro della mia stanza
come i pezzi di un puzzle
o lo scarabocchio di un bambino.

Per una stretta scala
in una piccola stanza
mentre giaccio sul mio letto
nel bagliore della sera
fissi sul muro
i miei occhi riescono appena a intravvedere
il percorso della mia vita
e il puzzle che io rappresento.

Da quando sono nato
all'istante in cui morirò
questi sono i percorsi che devo seguire
esattamente come devo respirare
Come un ratto in un labirinto
il percorso è davanti a me
e non cambia mai
finché il ratto non muore

E il percorso rimane nonostante tutto
sul muro dove la notte è ormai scesa
ed è giusto che sia così
perché è nell'oscurità che devo riflettere
Così come il colore della mia pelle,
o il giorno in cui mi sentirò vecchio
La mia vita è fatta di scelte
sulle quali ho ben poco controllo
