The Captain

Now the Captain called me to his bed
He fumbled for my hand
"Take these silver bars," he said
"I'm giving you command."
"Command of what, there's no one here
There's only you and me
All the rest are dead or in retreat
Or with the enemy."

"Complain, complain, that's all you've done
Ever since we lost
If it's not the Crucifixion
Then it's the Holocaust."
"May Christ have mercy on your soul
For making such a joke
Amid these hearts that burn like coal
And the flesh that rose like smoke."

"I know that you have suffered, lad,
But suffer this awhile:
Whatever makes a soldier sad
Will make a killer smile."
"I'm leaving, Captain, I must go
There's blood upon your hand
But tell me, Captain, if you know
Of a decent place to stand."

"There is no decent place to stand
In a massacre;
But if a woman take your hand
Go and stand with her."
"I left a wife in Tennessee
And a baby in Saigon
I risked my life, but not to hear
Some country-western song."

"Ah but if you cannot raise your love
To a very high degree,

"Your standing days are done," I cried,
"You'll rally me no more.
I don't even know what side
We fought on, or what for."

"I'm on the side that's always lost

And some of it was true
But there wasn't any burden left
So I'm laying it on you."

Now the Captain he was dying
But the Captain wasn't hurt
The silver bars were in my hand
I pinned them to my shirt.

Il Capitano mi chiamò presso il suo letto
cercò a tentoni la mia mano
"Prendi questi galloni d'argento," disse
"Ti dò il comando"
"Comando di cosa, non c'è nessuno qui
ci siamo solo lei e me
tutti gli altri sono morti o ritirati
o passati al nemico".

"Lamentarti, lamentarti, è tutto ciò hai fatto
fin da quando abbiamo perduto.
Se non è la Crocifissione
allora è l'Olocausto."
"Possa Cristo avere pietà della sua anima
per aver fatto questa battuta
in mezzo a questi cuori che bruciano come carbone
e la carne che sia alza come fumo".

"So che hai sofferto, ragazzo,
ma soffri un poco anche per questo:
qualunque cosa renda triste un soldato
farebbe sorridere un assassino."
"La sto lasciando, Capitano, devo andare
c'è sangue sulla sua mano
Ma mi dica, Capitano, se conosce
un buon posto dove stare".

"Non esite un buon posto dove stare
in mezzo a un massacro;
ma se una donna prende la tua mano
vai e stai con lei".
"Ho lasciato mia moglie nel Tennessee
e un bambino a Saigon
Ho rischiato la mia vita, ma non per ascoltare
Qualche canzone popolare del West".

"Ah, ma se non riesci ad innalzare il tuo amore
fino a un certo livello,
allora sei proprio l'uomo che pensavo che fossi
quindi vieni e combatti con me".
"I suoi giorni da combattente sono finiti", gridai,
"Non mi convincerà più.
Non so nemmeno da che parte
stiamo combattendo nè per che cosa"

"Sono dalla parte che ha sempre perso
contro l'esercito del Cielo
sono dalla parte del Doppio Uno
contro la parte dei Sette.
E ho letto la Dichiarazione dei Diritti Umani
e conteneva qualcosa di vero
Ma non era rimasto alcun fardello da portare
quindi lo lascio fare a te ora".

Il capitano stava morendo
ma non era ferito
i galloni d'argento erano nelle mie mani
così li appuntai alla mia camicia.
