note e significato
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 si basa interamente sull'ambiguità dell'espressione: "Getting stoned" che significa sia "venir lapidato" che "essere sballato sotto effetto di droghe". L'ultimo verso di ogni strofa può quindi voler dire: "Tutti dovrebbero essere lapidati" ma allo stesso tempo "tutti dovrebbero sballarsi", probabilmente nel senso che i critici dovrebbero prendersi meno sul serio. Si è preferita la seconda interpretazione che risulta secondo me più fedele al messaggio della canzone.
Il testo prende spunto dalle numerose critiche ricevute da Dylan a causa della sua ricerca di nuove sonorità (cominciava a esibirsi suonando una chitarra elettrica davanti al suo pubblico, abituato all'acustica); non a caso, la traccia apre Blonde on Blonde, album di rottura con il passato folk e di avvicinamento al rock.
L'arrangiamento con gli ottoni è stato suggerito dal produttore Bob Johnston che disse, dopo aver ascoltato la demo di Dylan: "Questa [canzone] sarebbe perfetta se la facessimo nello stile dell'Esercito della Salvezza". Dylan domandò quindi come avrebbero fatto a trovare fiati nel mezzo della notte, ma il trombettista Charlie McCoy fu lesto nel reperire un suonatore di trombone.
La versione finale venne registrata il 10 Marzo del 1966 nelle prime ore del mattino; per ottere quella sonorità anarchica che contraddistingue la canzone, i musicisti si scambiarono gli strumenti oppure li suonarono in posizioni strane. Johnston alla fine della registrazione: "E' una delle poche volte in cui ho visto Bob ridere".
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 ha indubbiamente ispirato Pietre, scritta da Gian Pieretti e presentata al Festival di San Remo del 1967.
