The Times they are a-Changin' è stata scritta tra il Settembre e l'Ottobre del 1963, col chiaro intento di creare un inno generazionale. La prima registrazione avvenne sotto forma di demo e si può ascoltare nell'album The Bootleg Series, Volumes 1 - 3. Il prefisso a- del titolo, in voga come rafforzativo nell'Inghilterra del Diciottesimo Secolo, vuole sottolineare il debito artistico nei confronti delle canzoni tradizionali irlandesi e scozzesi. Ricorda Dylan a tal proposito:
Era indubbiamente una canzone con un chiaro fine. Fu influenzata ovviamente dalle ballate irlandesi e scozzesi... 'Come All Ye Bold Highway Men', 'Come All Ye Tender Hearted Maidens'. Volevo scrivere una grande canzone, versi corti e concisi che si aggiungessero l'uno sull'altro in un modo ipnotico. Il Movimento per i Diritti Civili e la musica folk erano abbastanza vicini e alleati a quel tempo.
Per buona parte la canzone critica l'ignavia della classe politica americana, sorda alle richieste di pace, uguaglianza e giustizia delle nuove generazioni. In questo difficile clima politico, qualche settimana dopo la registrazione della canzone, il 22 Novembre 1963, il Presidente Kennedy venne assassinato a Dallas, Texas. La notte seguente Dylan avrebbe dovuto aprire un concerto con The Times They Are a-Changin':
Pensai: 'Wow, come posso aprire con quella canzone? Mi tireranno dei sassi'. Ma dovevo cantarla, il mio concerto cominciava da lì. [...] Qualcosa aveva fatto corto circuito in tutto il paese e la gente appludiva la canzone. E io non riuscivo a capire perché, o perché avessi scritto quella canzone. Non riuscivo a capire nulla. Era pura follia
Il finale della canzone cita il Vangelo di Marco (10-31): "E molti dei primi saranno ultimi e gli ultimi i primi".
The Times they are a-Changin' è stata registrata da decine di cantautori. Una delle versioni che contribuì alla sua popolarità fu indubbiamente quella dei The Byrds, che la aggiunsero al loro secondo album Turn! Turn! Turn! (1965).

Il soggetto è singolare: “Una” (e ovviamente si riferisce ad una sola delle tante versioni, quella dei The Byrds), quindi è corretto dire “contribuì” con il verbo alla terza persona singolare.

In questo periodo in cui il coronavirus sta cambiando priorità, abitudini e mettendo a nudo tutti i limiti di una società consumistica, in cui un ricercatore viene pagato pochissimo e un calciatore, un influencer, un personaggio tv sono considerati dei miti, questa canzone è sorprendentemente attuale.
